Tip: Scotiabank and CIBC are the most popular banks for GIC. You open the account online from Algeria, then wire the money. The whole process is done remotely — you don't need to be in Canada. After you arrive, the bank releases the money to you monthly (about CAD $1,720/month).
For applicants in Algeria: Wiring CAD $20,635 from Algeria is the trickiest part. Here's what to do: Contact your bank (BEA or Société Générale Algérie are best for international transfers) and ask about international wire transfers. You'll need the Canadian bank's SWIFT code and your GIC reference number. You'll also need a foreign currency purchase authorization from the Bank of Algeria. Be genuine — don't write what you think they want to hear IMPORTANT: Mention plans to return to Algeria. If they think you'll stay illegally, they'll reject you.
For applicants in Algeria: The medical exam must be done with a specific doctor approved by IRCC in Algeria — there are only a few in Algiers. Book early because wait times can be long. The exam includes a chest X-ray and blood tests. Results go directly to IRCC (not to you). It costs about 15,000-20,000 DZD. For the police clearance certificate, go to your local court (tribunal) — it usually takes 1-2 days.
After submitting your online application, IRCC will send you a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL) by email. This means they need your fingerprints and photo. Book an appointment at VFS Global in Algiers (it's the only center in Algeria for Canada) and go give your biometrics. It takes about 30 minutes.
